Breathing is something we do every moment of our lives, but most of us spend very little time understanding how we actually do it.

Working one-to-one gives us the opportunity to slow things down, look at your breathing more closely and explore what might be useful for you right now.

People come for different reasons.

You might simply be curious about breathing and want to understand it better. You might notice that stress or tension is affecting the way you breathe. You might want your breathing to better support your yoga, meditation, movement or training. Or perhaps you’ve been feeling depleted, overwhelmed or disconnected and are looking for a practical place to begin.

FIELD NOTE // POINT OF DEPARTURE

“There are many things we cannot control. Let’s focus on the ones we can.”

PROCESS & METHODOLOGY

How we work

Hands & Process

We begin with a conversation.

I want to understand why you’ve come, what is happening in your life, your previous experience with breathing and movement, and what you would like to explore.

From there, I observe how you breathe and we begin working together.

We may explore the movement of the diaphragm, ribs and abdomen, nasal breathing, unnecessary tension around the neck, shoulders and throat, breathing in stillness, breathing during physical effort, and the transition from effort back into recovery.

But the work doesn’t always need to move in the same direction.

FIELD NOTE // DIRECTION A

REDUCE THE NOISE

Sometimes we need to reduce the noise: slow down, release unnecessary tension, breathe more quietly, meditate and create enough space to notice what is happening.

FIELD NOTE // DIRECTION B

MOVE TOWARDS ACTION

At other times, we need to move towards action: find energy, meet challenge, move, breathe, express ourselves and put that energy somewhere.

Often, we need some of both.

That is one of the things I value about working one-to-one. We don’t need to begin with a predetermined formula. We can explore what you need at this particular moment and find an appropriate combination of breath, movement and stillness to support the work.

INTENTION & ADAPTABILITY

What are we working towards?

The goal is not to teach you one “correct” way to breathe.

I’m interested in developing a breath that can adapt.

A breath that can become quiet when you are still, respond when the body is working, support you under pressure and settle again when the demand has passed.

We work towards using the tension that is necessary without carrying the tension that isn’t.

And ultimately, the goal isn’t to spend your life consciously controlling every breath.

With practice, what initially requires attention can gradually become more natural.

“The technique begins to disappear into the way you breathe.”

AUTONOMY & FRAMEWORK

A clear piece of work

Finished Integration

I don’t believe one-to-one work needs to continue indefinitely.

We begin with why you have come and what you would like to work on. From there, we decide together what makes sense.

For some people, a small number of sessions may be enough. Others may benefit from a longer period of practice and exploration.

The aim is not to keep you coming back.

“The aim is for the work to become yours.”
